Over the years I have come to realize that we ingest a lot of harmful ingredients into our bodies. Whether it is via food or the cosmetics we are using, and to be quite frank with you I don’t like it, not one bit. So I have taken it upon myself to slowly change a few things on my life to change that. One of the thing I have changed is what cosmetics I buy and how I use them.
Shea butter is one of my favorite ingredients to use as it is just so easy to make into something beautiful, below I want to give you the simple steps in making your own whipped Shea Butter. You can use Shea Butter raw but I find that the whipped version is more comfortable to use.
So you will need to get some Shea Butter, most health shops do stock it, if not there are many online stores that can sell you a good quality Shea Butter. Just make sure that you are buying raw Shea Butter that has not been mixed with anything. You can see it straight away as Raw Shea Butter has a lovely golden creamy color and isn’t white. You can also get some carrier oil if you like a to make your butter go further or give it a smoother texture, as well as an essential oil of your choice if you would like to make it smell good.
Shea Butter is great because it can mix with almost anything without a problem. Just be careful of using synthetic or chemical types fragrances in your recipes as it can decrease the natural properties of the Shea Butter.
Ingredients for Whipped Shea Butter:
Raw Shea Butter (As much as you would like to make)
- Some carrier oils e.g. almond, apricot kernel etc. (Optional)
- Essential oil for scent (Optional)
- Hand mixer
- Glass bowl (Glass cleans better and doesn’t retain the scent unlike plastic)
- A container to place your finished product into
Steps for making Whipped Butter
- In a glass bowl take the raw Shea Butter and break it up with the fork, breaking up the big pieces as you go along, you will see after a while it starts to actually get slightly creamy. This step is important so that you don’t over work your mixer and damage it.
- Once the Shea Butter is broken up and slightly creamy add a small amount of your carrier oil as well as a couple of drops of your essential oil if you are using one.
- Mix it on medium to medium high with your mixer until all lumps are gone, you will see it actually starts to puff up a bit.
- Once you are done take a small amount between your fingers and see if you are happy with the texture and scent, if not then you can beat it for longer or add a bit more oil or essentials. Don’t add to much as it will make it to liquid.
- Once you are done, bottle your Shea Butter.
Ta-Da! It’s that easy, have fun experimenting with various scents and oils as Shea Butter is very versatile and such a lovely rich cream that I have used it on body and face.
